Introduction

Welcome to my website which will be focusing on teenage fashion in the 1950s, 60s, 70s, 80s, and the ’90s. Each page will be dedicated to a particular decade. Before I go any further I would like to give a territorial land acknowledgement to the Sto: lo people who have been living in the present-day cities of Langley, Abbotsford, and Mission for hundreds of years before Canada was ever a country. It is important to give these land acknowledgements to honour the Indigenous people who have lived and worked on this land historically and presently. When picking my topic for my website I wanted to pick something that continuously changes as time goes on. Clothing has always been a symbol of status as this has been seen in a variety of civilizations throughout mankind. A reason why fashion is important to historians is because clothes can identify the time period they were used in. Another reason the history of fashion is important is that it stands as a visual marker for societal change. In terms of the content found on my website, my written content will come from a variety of secondary sources, while all the images used will be from Primary sources. The main source of my primary sources will be high school yearbooks. Some of the schools include Phillip Sheffield High School, Abbotsford Senior, and Robert Bateman. All the schools listed are located within Abbotsford. Each decade will have its own dedicated page explaining the influences and fashion choices that were present during the time and will also showcase pictures of students in that respective decade to provide evidence of these societal changes. Fashion has drastically evolved throughout the 1950s-1990s and is due to the ever-changing cultural and societal norms reflected by both famous and influential people.
