Fashion in the 1990s was very different than the decades before, as it was deemed ‘cool’ to have a grungy look. Grunge is an alternative rock genre and subculture that emerged during the mid-1980s from the Pacific Northwest region of North America. The grunge music genre was heavily influenced by a mix of punk rock and heavy metal. Notable names that inspired grunge music include Nirvana, Kurt Cobain, Pearl Jam, and Stone Temple Pilots. This type of music was looked at to be dark and angry which directly translated to the clothing style it would inspire. Grunge fashion leaned more to the punk side as it portrayed more of a rebel look. Typical grunge articles of clothing included ripped jeans, denim jackets, converse sneakers, doc martens, and other laced-up combat-style boots. Other grunge articles of clothing included oversized shirts, baggy sweaters, bandanas, and beanies. The colour black was a staple in grunge fashion.

For teenage boys, longer hair or mohawks were usually the hairstyle of choice as they resembled their favourite musicians. This was also the time of face and body piercings and tattoos, especially for high school students and young adults. Aside from the grunge style, there were a few other pieces of clothing that were popular in the decade. One of these things is the plaid flannel shirt. The plaid flannel shirt was extremely popular with both teenage boys and girls. Tracksuits and other sports apparel were another piece of clothing that gained popularity in the 90s due to the introduction of many sports clothing brands.

For women, crop tops were also introduced in the market and are a clothing type that has made a comeback in our present world.
